Explanation and the Theory of Expert Problem Solving

Abstract

This report summarizes the activities and results of a four-year project that started in the middle of January 1985. This effort concentrated on the development of technology for providing knowledge-based expert planning and problem-solving systems with explanation capabilities. This technology enables such systems to explain and justify their decisions, recommendations, problem solving strategies and use of problem data so that users of such systems can have confidence in the consultations and advice provided by the expert system.
