Program Review: The Lifetime Effects of Space Radiation in Rhesus Monkeys

Abstract

This report summarizes findings from a select panel of scientists charged with reviewing the quality and productivity of the USAFSAM 24-year in- house study of the lifetime effects of space radiation in the rhesus monkey. The panel also had the responsibility of assessing the value of the study in both military and civilian scientific applications and making recommendations for maximizing the yield of relevant data as the animals near the end of their life span. The panelists reviewed results presented by project scientists during a 2- day conference in San Antonio, TX, 9-10 March 1989. They were unanimous in their endorsement of the study as a uniquely important resource of information on the late effects of space radiation and the interaction of late effects with the normal aging process. In asserting that the study should be continued for at least another 5 years, the panel made specific recommendations for additional work to be carried out in collaboration with scientists at other laboratories who could provide the breadth of technical expertise required to fully exploit the potential of this project. The scientific proceedings of the conference will be published as separate journal articles. (kr)
