Ytterbium Gauge Measurements to Obtain Stress-Time Profiles in Shocked Cast Composition B-3

Abstract

Ytterbium gauges were successfully used to measure stress-time profiles in cast Composition B-3. Targets of Composition B-3 containing one or two imbedded ytterbium gauges were impacted with either a fused silica or a Composition B-3 flyer. This report demonstrates that symmetric impact loading and unloading gas gun experiments using Composition B-3 can be performed. Peak stresses measured were compared with results of a previous study using quartz gauges. Stresses were obtained with the aid of an inclusion analysis. Peak stresses obtained were not in the stated accuracy of predicted stress values (based on the above study) when inclusion analysis used parameters obtained from calibration experiments performed for this study.
