Fort Benning Land-Use Planning and Management Study

Abstract

This report presents and describes a land-use planning method designed for implementation on US Army installations. The method assimilates and displays natural resource, military training, and sociological data in a geographic information system (GIS) format that is combined with a computerized management information system (MIS) designed to plan current and future land uses in a manner that minimizes potential resource use conflicts. The Earth Resources Data Analysis System GIS and the LANDMENU MIS were used to develop a prototype natural resource management plan for Fort Benning, Georgia, and to provide both general and specific land-use recommendations based on original soils, timber, wildlife, military training, and sociological data gathered on the installation. Keywords: Army facilities; Land management; Natural resources allocations; Resource management; Army planning.
