Hazard Classification Testing of Liquid Propellants

Abstract

The present TB 700-2 manual for establishing the hazard classification of energetic materials only addressed solid propellants and explosives in transportation and storage. The lack of a formal protocol for liquid propellants prompted the need for a program to provide the methodology, test procedures, test interpretations, and criteria for establishing a hazard classification. A methodology was submitted to the Safety Community for approval. The TB 700-2 manual tests were selected for evaluation as potential liquid propellant hazard classification candidates. Modifications had to be made to contain the liquid propellants for testing. This report addresses the small scale mandatory and non-mandatory interim classification tests, the modification required, the test results, and recommendation for establishing a hazard classification for a liquid propellant.
