Fracture Mechanics Analysis for Short Cracks

Abstract

This report pertains to the development of the Surface Integral and Finite Element (SAFE) hybrid method for the analysis of short or physically small cracks. The development of yield strip models for modeling crack tip plasticity is presented. The effects of loading and unloading are investigated with regard to plastic zone size and residual deformation. Calculations for the opening loads are presented for long and short cracks and the difference in fatigue crack growth behavior is determined and correlated to the effective stress intensity factor range. Keywords: Fracture, Short cracks, Finite element, Integral equation, Fatigue.
