Image Understanding Research

Abstract

This technical report summarizes the image understanding activities performed by USC during the period October 1, 1982 through September 30, 1983 under contract number F33615-82-K-1786 with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Information Processing Techniques Office. This contract is monitored by the Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, OH. The purpose of this research program is to develop techniques and systems for understanding images, particularly for mapping applications. This report describes techniques for: visual inspection using linear features, relaxation matching for map-matching, techniques for contour matching, a segment-based stereo matching method, use of shadows in the interpretation of aerial images, use of image shading to infer 3-D depth, use of texture for image segmentation, VLSI implementation of graph isomorphism algorithms and a study of suitable architectures for implementing image understanding algorithms.
