Advanced Ceramic Armor Materials
Abstract
This report describes the research completed by Corning Incorporated under the U.S. Army Research Office contract DAAL03-89-C-0015. The purpose of this program was to develop improved low-cost ceramic materials and processing technology for advanced armor systems, specifically for use in heavy vehicle armor to defeat long rod kinetic energy threats. Several toughened alumina targets were fabricated and characterized. Ballistic evaluation was completed by the Southwest Research Institute. Keywords: Ceramic, Armor, Toughened alumina, Materials, Fabrication, Ballistic evaluation, Zirconia.
