The Future Role of United States Forces in the Republic of Korea

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the future role of U.S. military forces in the Republic of Korea. For the past 37 years the national interest of the United States in Northeast Asia has been a policy of maintaining stabilization and a military balance in the region. This study examines over time, the geo-strategic importance of the Korean Peninsula in Northeast Asia. The evolution of United States and Republic of Korea relations is traced to show how this relationship matured over the years to the present. The interest of the four major powers in the region, the Soviet Union, China, Japan, and the United States, are discussed in both a historical and modern day setting. The military capabilities of North and South Korea are compared along with their military strategies. North Korea, having the sixth largest army in the world, remains a real threat to the survival of Republic of Korea.
