Team Yankee: A Scenario Whose Time Has Passed

Abstract

The past year has been marked by revolutionary events in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. The Warsaw Pact has disintegrated both as a political and a military alliance, and the Soviet Union is struggling to maintain the unity of its various republics. The military threat to the nations of the NATO alliance has been drastically reduced, and a new status of world order is emerging. This study seeks to examine the forces that have brought about these changes in order to assist contemporary military officers in their efforts to respond to these changes. This paper traces the shifts in Soviet military doctrine, and discusses economic, social, political, and military changes inside the Soviet Union. The disintegration of the Warsaw Pact is also addressed. Keywords: East West relations; Balance of power; Military operations/doctrine; Foreign military forces.
