Cultural Resources Survey at Vacherie Revetment (M-150.3 to 150.0-R), St. James Parish, Louisiana
Abstract
R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. conducted an intensive archeological survey and assessment of the proposed Vacherie Revetment easement along .3 miles of the Mississippi River in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Historic and archival research concentrating on the economic developments affecting the proposed construction item are discussed. Historic maps show bankline changes and prior construction within the survey area. Survey located Site 16 SJ 52, the remnants of the c. 1959 Maxime Rodrigue boatyard and ways. Artifacts include a single-drum chain-driven winch associated with the operation of boatways. Most of the boatyard equipment, including the boatways, are missing from the site, and portions of the site are graded. Based on the recency of the site and its lack of integrity, the site was assessed to be not significant.
