Attack and Defense: Black and White, or Shades of Gray?

Abstract

This monograph discusses the dynamics of attack and defense at the tactical level in mid- to high- intensity mechanized warfare. It examines the dynamics in theory, doctrine, and recent historical experience. The monograph concludes that attack and defense are not mutually exclusive. Both consist of the same multi-dimensional elements. It is the dynamics of these elements that determine the relative benefits classically accorded to either attack or defense. Finally, it finds that the AirLand Battle framework of deep, close, and rear operations further modifies the classical dynamics. Keywords: Attack, Warfare, Active defense.
