Leadership - A Doctrine Lost and Found

Abstract

Since the end of World War II, the U.S. army has attempted to adopt positive aspects of the World War II German Army's decentralized tactical leadership method currently called Augtragstaktik. This effort has been less than successful due to the long history of centralized tactical leadership in the U.S. Army. When the U.S. Army adopted AirLand Battle as its tactical and operational maneuver doctrine, it was concluded that decentralized leadership was necessary to successfully execute the maneuver required by that doctrine. The focus of this paper is to determine whether the U.S. Army can adopt decentralized leadership required by its maneuver oriented doctrine. Keywords: Leadership, Battles, Tactical aircraft, Decentralization.
