Studies of Altered Response to Infection Induced by Severe Injury

Abstract

In this fourth year of the contract, 23 patients were assessed for altered monocyte immune functions. New assays were introduced to assess patient monocyte (M0) production of Transforming Growth Factor (TGF) and Interleukin-6. Both M0 TGF and IL-6 production were found to be elevated in immunocompromised patient's M0. Elevated TGF levels were demonstrated to further augment patient M0 Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production by an autocrine stimulation pathway. Elevated M0 IL-6 production was linked to the increased stimulation of patients' M0 Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) and to elevated M0 PGE2 levels.
