Iodoperfluorohexane as a Lasant for Iodine Lasers

Abstract

A comparative analysis is made of iodoperfluorohexane, C6F13I to iodoperfluoropropane, C3F7I when used as the gain medium in an iodine laser system. Parameters for this comparison are the absorption cross section in the pumpband 250 to 290 nanometers, laser output energy, and the production of the molecular iodine (I2), the major quenching by-product of iodine laser reactions. This study confirms that C6F13I has an absorption cross section that is almost equal to C3F7I and laser output energy as high as 1.5 times greater. The amount of I2 produced is less in C6F13I due to an I2 elimination and recombination processes that are yet to be fully understood. Theses.
