Social Science Research and Literature on the Contemporary Military in Socialist States

Abstract

A number of problems exist with the body of social science literature and research on the contemporary military in socialist/communist states. Much of this research is nonscientific in nature, and what is of interest is often unavailable to even social scientists. Organizational differences set aside communist from western militaries in the areas of social science research institutions in the East are institutes of military history. There is a strict separation of civilian social scientists from military personnel involved in social science research. Practically the entire production of social science work comes from military institutions and authors. Only a fraction of this goes unclassified. The share of scientific content in this literature varies widely-- from zero to, exceptionally, above half.
