Maternal Factors Influencing Perinatal Transmission of HIV Infection

Abstract

This annual report covers progress from the first year of a five year project evaluating the natural history of HIV infection in pregnancy. This study will establish a cohort of 240 women who are classified as follows: (1) HIV infected pregnant women who are active substance users, (2) HIV infected pregnant women who are not active substance users, (3) HIV negative pregnant woman who are substance users. During the first year of funding, the work scope was revised in consultation with USARMDC and NIAID projects officer and revised for final approval by the IRB's of the Army Surgeon General and New Jersey Medical School. Working groups of our study team were established to evaluate patient recruitment, counselling, testing, forms development, data management, biostatistics, laboratory procedures and standardization. The project was activated for full enrollment and collection of data for all parameters by the end of the first project period.
