Final Report for ONR Contract N00014-18-K-0018 (Cornell University)

Abstract

The research in this contract was directed toward the study of plasma waves and wave particle interactions in space. Using the Viking space craft, weak double layers were discovered and plasma irregularities were shown to be a universal phenomena in the magnetosphere. Using sounding rockets hydrogen Bernstein waves and electrostatic oxygen cyclotron waves were shown to be responsible for transversely accelerating ion conics. In another area the effects of injecting ion beams and VLF waves on the ionosphere and magnetosphere. (jhd)
