A Business Case for Electronic Commerce

Abstract

The Defense Logistics Agency has been designated as DoD's Executive Agent for Electronic data interchange and Data Protection. One of its first tasks was to examine the economic implications of Electronic Commerce. This report presents the results of that examination. Based upon an examination of 16 key documents, we estimate that DoD could realize direct and indirect cost savings of almost $1.2 billion over a 10-year period by replacing these manually processed documents with their electronic equivalents. To achieve those savings, DoD would need to make investments totaling approximately $80 million in new systems and procedures. (Author) (kr)
