Relationships of General Ability, Specific Ability, and Job Category for Predicting Training Performance

Abstract

The roles of general ability (g), specific abilities (s), and job category are investigated as predictors of final school grade for 78,041 Air Force enlistees in 82 jobs. General cognitive ability and specific abilities were defined by scores on the first and subsequent principal components of the enlistment selection and classification test, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. A linear models analysis revealed that g was a good predictor of all criterion measures and that s added a small but statistically significant amount. Adjusting the final school grade criterion scale using job category variables significantly improved prediction. (EMK)
