Diode Code Development

Abstract

This final report used and modified codes such as MAGIC to model vacuum diode regions of the DNA superpower ten terawatt generators such as the DNA/Aurora 14 TW pulser. In regards to the unpredictable destruction of the tantalum anode during shots, it is shown that when ions are present in the diode gap, the electron flow pinches, resulting in a high energy density at the anode. This is believed to be a mechanism of the anode destruction. When ions are not present, our models show that the flow does not pinch. In coupling of the MAGIC code to a model of a Plasma Radiation Source it was also found that the electron flow outside of the pinch is much less important than anticipated with the maximum current in free electrons only a few percent of that through the pinch for typical plasma radiation sources as those used on multi-terawatt generators.
