Collaborative Studies of Polar Cap Ionospheric Dynamics

Abstract

This contract was awarded to continue data acquisition and analysis efforts using a set of optical instruments housed in a trailer on the pier at Thule Air Base in Greenland. The primary experimental program remote measured neutral winds and temperatures at about 250 km altitude. Published results from these investigations are included in this report. In addition, the following secondary programs were initiated during the term of this contract: (a) the measurement of neutral winds at about 95 km altitude; (b) the measurement of neutral temperatures at mesopause altitudes; (c) the acquisition of all sky images of airglow/auroral emissions. The station operated in an automatic data acquisition mode during the months September to April during the period covered by this contract. This document describes the instrumentation at the site and displays the results of the analysis performed on the data acquired by the instrumentation. Keywords: Polar ionosphere, Fabry Perot interferometer, Atmospheric thermodynamics.
