AGARD/SMP Review Damage Tolerance for Engine Structures. 3. Component Behaviour and Life Management

Abstract

The Structures and Materials Panel is co-ordinating a series of four Workshops planned within the framework of a Review on Damage Tolerance for Engine Structures. The Review aims to address the areas critical to the acceptance of an approach based on damage tolerance concepts as an alternative lifing philosophy to that of 'safe-life' for the design of engine components. Workshops have been held at two previous Panel Meetings dealing with 'Non- Destructive Evaluation of Components, AGARD R-768' and 'Defects and Quantitative Materials Behaviour, AGARD R-769'. The third Workshop was held during the sixty eighth Panel Meeting and surveyed current approaches to the prediction of component behaviour and the establishment of suitable inspection schedules. The role of testing and life management planning in these approaches was examined. Future technology requirements and the need for a common AGARD approach were discussed. This publication includes the presentations made in the course of the third Workshop, together with Recorders' Report of the discussions.
