An Interactive System of Computer Generated Graphic Displays for Motivating Meaningful Learning of Matrix Operations and Concepts of Matrix Algebra

Abstract

This thesis evaluated students' responses to a teaching method designed to involve students and teachers of mathematics in a meaningful learning experience using a system that allowed the student to participate in discovery learning. Th system was comprised of a computer program that motivated visualization of concepts of matrix algebra, and a procedure that encouraged the students to verbalize each concept, create an algorithm for hte matrix operation, and discover a mathematical formula that described the process for each operation. The teaching system is based on modern learning theory and reflects several recommendations made by the Commission on Standards for School Mathematics to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM). Of the 40 students who participated in the survey, over 87% felt the matrix program was more interesting than an ordinary lecture, 80% felt the system was more fun than reading a textbook, and 92% indicated they would use a learning tool similar to the matrix computer program if given the opportunity. Over 82% of the students believed the matrix teaching system helped them learn matrix algebra, while 72% felt the teaching system helped them learn matrix algebra better than they would have under typical classroom conditions.
