Adaptive Interfaces

Abstract

The purpose of this research and development endeavor was to design and implement an adaptive intelligent interface for a command-and-control-style domain. The primary functionality of the resulting interface was to be able to adapt its presentation of information to the individual user, based upon the current task and the user's personal preferences and experiences as captured in an explicit user model. The CHORIS (Computer Human Object Oriented Reasoning Interface System) software system is a knowledge based intelligent interface architecture which supports mixed modality input and output, high-level plan management, adaptation to individual users and user roles, and tailoring of system response information to the currently executing high-level task and the user's preferences. CHORIS has been extended to support users with different roles within the command-and-control-style domain of emergency management. The interface demonstrates the powerful effects that the functionality captured within CHORIS can have in enhancing user performance in responding to complex situations in a timely manner. Keywords: Interface, Command and control, Adaptive interface, Intelligent interface, User modeling.
