Decision Support Environment for Concurrent Engineering Requirements
Abstract
This paper presents the results of internal Air Force Human Resources Laboratory (AFHRL) research investigating the potential applications of Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to Concurrent Engineering (CE). Influences from the Total Quality Management (TQM) initiative, as well as CE, have increased acquisition emphasis on customer satisfaction and proper definition of the Voice of the Customer. In weapon system acquisition the combat command's requirements are the voice of the customer and it is their needs and requirements that must be captured, defined, and satisfied. To help achieve this goal, as well as TQm and CE goals of improved acquisition efficiency and effectiveness, this research investigated the weapon system requirements process. A decision support environment accommodating the requirements process and incorporating the methods and tools will enhance CE through the earliest parts of design, the definition of the weapon system requirements, and the needs upon which those requirements are based. A finding of the research was QFD could be used as a paradigm for a Decision Support System (DSS) environment to incorporate the investigated methods, and thereby enhance the requirements definition, analysis, and management aspects of weapon system acquisition.
