Construction of Flowing Afterglow Apparatus

Abstract

The design and construction of a Flowing Afterglow (FA) apparatus consists of three basic sections: Flow tubes, a detection system and a Vacuum/ Gas Handling system. This instrument can be used for gas-phase chemical kinetics studies of both ion-neutral and neutral-neutral reactions. The instrument was designed in a modular manner so that it can be easily assembled for appropriate experiments. A mechanical chopper is added to the system so that modulated molecular beam experiments can be performed. The detection system, which is a Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, can be used without the flow tubes as an analytical tool.
