Evaluation of Sleeve Gun Effectiveness in Repelling Adult Striped Bass
Abstract
This reports documents tests of the effectiveness of low frequency sounds produced by a sleeve gun in redistributing adult striped bass (Morone saxatilis) in net pens in the forebay of John H. Kerr Dam, Virginia. Behavioral observations and statistical analyses indicated that adult striped bass in 20- by 4- by 4-ft (6.1- by 1.2- by 1.2-m) pens exhibited only subtle and inconsequential responses to sounds produced by a 150-cm3 sleeve gun. Startle responses were apparent only early in the tests, and fright responses, that would have been suggested by increased swimming speeds or strong directional movements away from the sound source, were never observed.
