Accelerated Evaporation of Liquids in Electric Fields.
Abstract
The interaction between electric forces and the evaporation of liquids has been studied for many years. Indications exist that electric charge transfer can occur when liquids evaporate, and conversely that the evaporation rate of liquids can be modified by electric charges or fields. The drying of wetted materials can be appreciably accelerated by electric forces, and that a technique of practical military importance, based on this phenomenon, may well be developed. However, in order to assess this possibility more fully and thereby optimise any potential practical exploitation of this process, it is crucial to perform comprehensive new studies which provide a much more detailed quantitative understanding of the physics involved, and examine a wider variety of materials (substrates) and wetting agents (liquids).
