Amazon Anopheles Biology. 12. Occurrence of Anopheles Species, Malaria Control and Transmission Dynamics in the Urban Zone of Ariquemes (Rondonia)

Abstract

Data on incidence and distribution of Anopheles species in Ariquemes (RO) reveal that variability is greater in the periphery of the city and that Anopheles darlingi is recorded in practically all collection points. Entomological study showed different penetration levels of the species in the urban areas. These areas had the highest mosquitoes per man/hour indices, with variations being noted in the sampling frequency and in conformance with the location of the urban area. Vector population density measurements reveal seasonal changes, the lowest figures being recorded during the winter. Malaria transmission is discussed in consideration of: (1) the role of the city's physical structure during the establishment phase, (2) the river banks bordering the urban area and their relationship to the anopheline development cycle.
