The Horn of Africa and Arabia

Abstract

Definition of United States interests in the Horn of Africa has long preoccupied both those who make American foreign policy and those who are called upon to implement it. It has never been as easy task, and it is even less so now as the world enters the 1990's. The protuberance at the northeastern corner of the African continent, as the junction of the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, sits aside the major sea link between Europe and Asia, a route through which much of oil wealth of the Persian Gulf must pass on its way to the West. This alone gives it geopolitical and strategic importance.
