Modelling of the Impact Response of Fibre-Reinforced Composites

Abstract

This Final Report on a three-year programme with the above title summarises the work that has been over this period in three different areas - i) the development of experimental techniques for determining the impact mechanical properties of fibre reinforced epoxy laminates, ii) the experimental results obtained for the tensile, compressive and interlaminar shear properties of woven reinforced carbon/epoxy, glass/epoxy, Kevlar/epoxy, and hybrid carbon-glass/ epoxy laminates and iii) the attempts that have been made to model the experimentally observed behaviour using a) a simple laminate theory approach and b) the method of finite elements. The present position regarding the modelling of the response of composite materials to impact loading is then critically assessed and suggestions are made for future work required in this area.
