Comprehension or Confusion: Commander's Intent in the AirLand Battle

Abstract

Historically, fog and friction have exacerbated the best laid battle plans of even the most intuitive wartime commanders. To mitigate these ever-present elements, the U.S. Army emphasizes the decentralized execution and AirLand Battle. Paramount to the successful execution of this decentralized philosophy of command is the concept of commander's intent. Yet, there currently exists much debate concerning this concept's definition and method(s) of expression. This apparent debate provides the basis for this monograph, which seeks to determine if the concept of commander's intent is adequately addressed in the doctrine of AirLand Battle.
