Army Weapons: Status of the Sense and Destroy Armor System

Abstract

The Army's Sense and Destroy Armor (SADARM), a new system of target- sensing munitions, is being developed to enhance the capabilities of the 155- millimeter (mm) howitzer and the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) to attack targets such as self-propelled enemy artillery, when stationary. Through fiscal year 1991, the Congress has provided about $600 million in research, development, test, and evaluation funding for the system. In 1988, we reported on the status of the SADARM system. As you requested, we have updated that analysis to determine (1) actions taken by the Army to comply with congressional directives, (2) the current program schedule, (3) the Army's estimate of the program's total cost, (4) the status of technical development, (5) test results to date, and (6) the Army's assessment of the counterfire mission and of SADARM'S ability to meet that requirement.
