Electromagnetic Launch Technology Assessment. Scientific Basis and Unified Treatment: Forces and Electromechanical Power Conversion (Analytical and Numerical Methods),

Abstract

This report suggests that one of the reasons why the electromagnetic (EM) hypervelocity launchers and associated power supply technologies have not reached their expectations is that most research has focused on simple railgun accelerators and homopolar generators. Complex rotating flux compressors would drastically improve the performance of EM launchers. This report explores the computations for the design of such complex magnetic flux compressors and heteropolar hypervelocity accelerators. It presents a finite element method formulation for electromagnetic field diffusion.
