Long Duration Exposure Facility

Abstract

The LDEF satellite carried glass and plastic microstructures in the form of spherical particles. Moreover, the radiation-induced tracks in the CR-39 plastic track detectors yield conical microstructures when the plastic foils are etched in NaOH for extended period. The shape and size of the cone depends on the LET of the incident particle and its angle of incidence. The optical properties of these microstructures are analyzed by elastic and inelastic light scattering. The results of these investigations point to new techniques for neutron dosimetry.
