Tool Version Management Technology: A Case Study.

Abstract

This report describes a portion of the problem of maintaining tools for the purpose of software development. It discusses an innovative solution to tool version management available in the commercially available Network Software Environment from Sun Microsystems, Inc. It applies NSE mechanisms to solve three problems that are common to the use and management of tools for software development. The primary focus of this task is on environment support for the management of tool versions and automation of tool version management and selection, and to discuss an innovative solution available in a commercial software development environment. We discuss a problem that any facility providing support for software development faces: the management of software development tools. The problem is broken down into three issues: tool version organization and selection, the stability of selected tool versions and the application context of selected tool versions.
