Designing an Advanced Instructional Design Advisor: Cognitive Science Foundations. Volume 1

Abstract

The Advanced Instructional Design Advisor (AIDA) is an R&D project being conducted by the Armstrong Laboratory's Human Resources Directorate aimed at producing automated instructional design guidance for developers of computer- based instructional materials. The process of producing effective computer-based instructional materials is complex and time-consuming. Few experts exist to ensure the effectiveness of this process. As a consequence, the Air Force is committed to providing its courseware developers with up-to-date guidance appropriate for the creation of computer-based instruction. This guidance needs to be firmly grounded in cognitive learning theory. In addition, the assistance should be provided in an automated setting to ensure that the entire process is as efficient as possible. This technical paper addresses the cognitive foundations for instructional design guidance.
