Uncertainties in Stress Analysis on Marine Structures

Abstract

A survey of the state of knowledge on uncertainties in stress analyses on marine structures is presented. Uncertainties are classified and methods for modeling them are presented. Modeling uncertainties and their effect on extreme design loads are emphasized. Uncertainties in the following steps of stress analysis are quantified and ranked in terms of relative importance: Description of loading environment, Evaluation of loads, Combination of loads, Structural analysis and Fatigue.
