Advanced Submarine Technology Program
Abstract
This report gives an overall description of the capabilities of the DARPA Submarine Hydrodynamics/Hydroacoustics Technology Center (SH/HTC). Specifically, the need for the SH/HTC to address complex hydrodynamic and hydroacoustic submarine design problems and the concept of operation of the Center are discussed. The charter establishing the Center and the Center's objectives are described. Hardware and software capabilities of the Center as well as the facility setup are described in detail. The four main technical areas of study being addressed by the SH/HTC are propulsor/hull flow, maneuvering, hydro/structural acoustics, and special studies. Problems associated with understanding these areas are described along with a description of the corresponding solutions and topics of research to be undertaken by the SH/HTC. Both past and current engineering R&D activities in the four main technical areas of study are described. A detailed summary of experiments conducted is included. Plans covering the expansion of the Center's computational capabilities, both hardware and software, are discussed. Planned research activities at the SH/HTC are also described.
