Propagation of a Neutralized Ion Beam.

Abstract

Beam propagation experiments were performed with various plasma sources to understand the physics of plasma motion in a transverse magnetic field and magnetic diffusion in a plasma. High-beta hydrogen beams propagated by ExB drift at their initial velocity. Low-beta plasmas showed initial ExB drift, followed by deceleration, transverse compression and thermalization of the beam energy. A wide range of diamagnetism was observed. Magnetic diffusion times were consistent with those based on Hall conductivity.
