Experimental Investigation of a MM-Wave Planar Antenna

Abstract

This thesis investigates a new mm-wave Bilateral Slot Line (BSL) antenna and its relation to the Linearly Tapered Slot Antenna (LTSA). The BSL antenna consists of a tapered double-sided slotline and can be viewed as two identical LTSAs sandwiched back to back. Dielectric substrates with permittivities of 2.33 and 6.0 were used to construct these antennas. The theoretical background, the design, and the performance in the frequency range 5-9 GHz of the new microwave integrated circuit antenna is presented. The effects of several parameters such as dielectric constant, stripline and slotline characteristic impedance, antenna structure, and transition scheme on the radiation patterns and return loss were experimentally investigated. Some relationships between the width of stripline and slotline, their characteristic impedance and the dielectric constant are reported. Guidelines are laid to design the LTSA and BSL antennas.
