Annual VA/EM-IRIEM Research Symposium: Environmental Emergencies Held in Clearwater, Florida on 22-24 February 1987.

Abstract

Within the broad reaches of emergency medicine, a number of specific clinical and research disciplines have emerged. These include resuscitation, toxicology, pre-hospital care, disaster management, and injury prevention. Wilderness and environment emergencies may now be added to the list. Encounters with the natural environment lead predictably to medical misfortune manifested in a challenging array of clinical presentations. Emergency physicians on the front line are confronted with disorders of every variety and are expected to be knowledgeable and precise in diagnosis and therapy. In the last ten years, we have become acknowledged as experts.
