The Atchafalaya River Delta. Report 11. Two-Dimensional Modeling
Abstract
The Wax Lake Outlet and Atchafalaya River deltas in Louisiana have grown dramatically, and concern over the impact of this growth has led the US army Corps of Engineers to conduct an investigation to predict how the deltas will evolve over the next 50 years. The goal was to design a series of modeling tools capable of predicting delta evolution and the impacts of that growth on navigation, flood control, salinity, and sedimentation. The technical approach for this investigation was built upon the TABS-2 finite element modeling system. The fully two-dimensional models for hydrodynamics, salinity, and sediment transport were first verified to extensive prototype data, then employed to predict delta evolution for existing condition at years 1980, 1995, 2010, and 2030 within the project area. Subsidence estimates for the system were made by regression of historical water-surface elevation gaging stations.
