World Reference Center for Arboviruses and Retroviruses

Abstract

The World Reference Center for Arboviruses and Retroviruses identified viruses from Thailand, Nepal, Egypt, Colombia, and Panama. Cache Valley virus from a recruit on jungle training was characterized. RNA-RNA hybridization of orbiviruses and reassortment of these dsRNA viruses correlated. Attempts to identify by IFA a novel agent from Kaposi's sarcoma cases were negative with a battery of arboviruses; retrovirus (HIV) isolation capability was transferred to Bogota in a collaborative study. Virus reference reagents for arboviruses were distributed to military laboratories and other laboratories world-wide. A low passage collection of viruses was augmented to over 330 strains.
