Theoretical, Experimental and Numerical Studies on Hybrid Acoustooptic Bistable Devices

Abstract

This final report provides a short summary of various bistable optical devices, with emphasis on the acoustooptic bistable device. Difference equations describing an acoustooptic system have been defined along with numerical simulations to study the system dynamics. A summary of experimental work performed to verify some of the effects of hysteresis and bistability is included. A study of some of the characteristics of the underlying dynamical system using conventional methods is also included. This report also gives an alternative explanation of hysteresis and indicates how to study the behavior of the system for time varying inputs.
