The Screening and Evaluation of Experimental Antiparasitic Drugs

Abstract

Malaria chemotherapeutic studies in mice included 6 different testing systems. A primary antimalarial blood schizonticidal test (MM) where in 10 years 20,500 compounds were evaluated against Plasmodium berghei with 2,100 exhibiting antimalarial activity. A casual prophylactic test (RP) to detect compounds active against the tissue schizonts where in 5 years over 600 compounds were tested with 380 active. A secondary antimalarial test (Ag) were in 10 years over 2000 compounds were evaluated in a variety of different protocols. Compounds were tested for cross resistance patterns against a battery of drug-resistant parasites. New lines resistant to mefloquine and halofantrine were developed.
