Gulf Security and the Gulf Arab Contribution

Abstract

The defeat of Iraq in the 1991 War was so decisive that it appeared that the military balance in the Gulf had been fundamentally altered. However the six states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) remain incapable of meeting the external military threats posed by the various hostile states of the region, and are limited by a number of immutable factors in the degree to which they can modernize and expand their armed forces to counter these threats. In this study, the military capabilities of those threat states are examined and specific capabilities are determined. GCC military efforts are analyzed in detail, to include the armed forces of each state, and the various cooperative efforts which have been undertaken. Specific vulnerabilities are determined. The various factors which act to constrain GCC military capabilities and potential are analyzed in detail.
