Prevention of Influenza and Other Respiratory Diseases
Abstract
The antibody response of recruits to the standard trivalent influenza vaccine for the 1989 - 1990 season was excellent to all three components. In particular, the response to the B component was unusually good, when compared to previous years. In contrast, the response of the permanent part was not as strong, with 34% failing to reach protective titers against the HlNl antigen, and 10-12% unprotected against the other two components. Cell-mediated immunity to the influenza vaccine was measured by enumerating influenza-specific responder T cells in the peripheral blood. Vaccination doubled (from 40% to 83%) the number of individuals in whom these cells could be readily detected.
