Strategies for Biopolymer Engineering of PHB-Like Materials

Abstract

The overall objective of this proposal is to study the genetics and enzymology of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) biosynthesis at the molecular level in order to provide strategies for the development of new PHB-like biopolymers. Specific aims are to (1) control the chain length of the PHB polymers produced in fermentation processes through genetic manipulation; (2) incorporate different monomers into PHB producing co-polymers with different physical properties, and (3) examine the physical/rheological properties of these new biopolymers in order to develop criteria at the molecular level.
